Philosophy 351: Week 8, Day 1

April 30, 2007

Ah…the streak has ended. My paper from week 6 on the topic of being either for or against Evidentialism based on Romans 1:18-20 just missed the mark of getting my 5th 100% in a row. I am actually glad that I did not, even though I did write my best, because I was starting to feel a little guilty about it.

Not sure when the paper I turned in yesterday (on the topic of Defending the Existence of God) returned with a grade. I suspect it will not be until next week at some point. This is the last week for this class and then I head right into the next class next Monday. That class will be Bible 313 - Biblical Interpretation. I’m thinking this should be another review type of situation because I’ve gone through a Biblical Hermenuetics class before and the textbook for this class is one that I already own and have read. Since the classes are 8-week’s long, this is the only class I’ll be taking for the first 8 weeks and then I have two classes for the second 8-week session. Those will be Bible 113 - Old Testament History and Philosophy 225 - Introduction to Ethics.

I’m looking forward to all those classes - guess I will see how it goes. :)

Music Monday: Hero

April 30, 2007

Hero (listen - 3:42)

When the house fell asleep
There was always a light
And it fell from the page
To the eyes of an American boy
In a storybook land
I could dream what I read
When it went to my head, I’d see
I want to be a hero

But the practical side
Said the question was still
When you grow up, what will you be?
I want to be a hero

Hero
It’s a nice-boy notion that the real world’s gonna destroy
You know
It’s a Marvel-comic-book, Saturday-matinee fairy-tale, boy

Growing older you’ll find
That illusions are bought
And the hero you thought you’d be
Was just another zero
I want to be a hero

Heroes died
When the squealers bought ‘em off
Died
When the dealers got ‘em off
Welcome to the ‘in-it-for-the-money-as-an-idol’ show
When they ain’t as big as life
When they ditch their second wife
Where’s the boy to go?
Gotta be a hero

When the house fell asleep
From a book I was led
To a light that I never knew
“I want to be your hero”
And He spoke to my heart
From the moment I prayed
“Here’s a pattern I made for you
I want to be your hero
I want to be your hero”

- Steve Taylor, Meltdown (1984)

Another classic song by one of Christian music’s pioneers. This song is a great reminder that if our hero is anyone other than the Christ that we are going to find ourselves continually frustrated and let down. Cover-up has become an art all its own. But eventually the cracks appear and no amount of effort can be mustered to conceal it any longer and those we thought were good, upstanding people turn out to have their feet made from the same clay as ours - they just had better stylists and publicists than us common people.

Philosophy Friday: Question 5

April 27, 2007

What is truth? Or, another way to ask the same question is what makes something true?

Philosophy 351: Week 7, Day 4

April 26, 2007

Four papers in a row with 100% - just crazy…

This now bring my overall grade in the class up to a 98.1%. He still has one paper that has not been graded yet (the one I turned in this past Sunday) and then I have 2 more to write - one this week and my final one next week.

As long as I do not tank on my last couple of assingments I should be able to pull an “A” in this class. :)

Theology Tuesday: Revelation 21:1-4

April 24, 2007

An Eternal Perspective

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

What a great thought and something to remain focused on, especially when difficulties arise here and life just seems to wear you down. It is also interesting that in the beginning God dwelt with man, then he dwelt in the tabernacle that Moses was instructed to built, then he dwelt with man again but in the incarnation of Jesus, and currently he dwells in us. But this passage says that once again he will dwell with man and live with man.
